The situation: a major aggregates producer was operating two compressors at its site, one for day-to-day operations with a second unit as a failover/back-up. The latter, an Atlas Copco GA50VSD failed and Motivair was asked to quote for the repair. Upon inspection it was concluded that repair was not the best option.
The solution: a recommendation was made to replace the compressor and also change the client’s operating process, which would, should the suggestion be accepted, accelerate the return on investment. This was based on our assessment of the current operation where the main compressor – a GA55VSDFF (55kW) – was oversized and underutilised for the application. However, the unit would make a satisfactory back-up. A comprehensive two-week energy audit further confirmed our thinking. As a result Motivair selected, installed and commissioned a 18.5kW variable speed compressor to replace the GA55VSDFF as the main unit.
The outcome: the reduced energy consumption of the new compressor led to a 33% drop in energy usage at the site. This equated to an annual saving of over £5,000 and resulted in a 14-tonne reduction of CO2 , lessening the client’s environmental impact while making its daily operations more resilient.
